Council to go after businesses and residential property owners for outstanding rates and taxes

Newly appointed Town Clerk Carol Sooba is putting businesses and residential property owners on notice that the council will be coming after them for outstanding rates and taxes which are critical in meeting the financial needs of the city.

Sooba said that the garbage pile up in the city is an embarrassment to this country. She pledged to restore the city to its former glory.

The new town clerk said she is hoping to work with the City Constabulary to ensure they can effectively carry out its mandate.

The union and some councilors were against the appointment of the former legal officer, which they say was a political one, but Sooba said that she is willing to work with all sides.

Sooba appointment comes amidst the discovery of gross financial irregularities at the City Hall. The Police are currently in the offices of the city treasurer and town clerk as the investigation continues  into those allegations.
