Education Ministry to revise controversial issue of automatic promotion of students in the school system – 4th Jul 2013

shot0006This time around the Education Ministry hopes that after several consultations with stakeholders on the automatic promotion policy that the proposed changes would find favor with parents.

One major reason given by the Education Ministry for the implementation of the scheme of automatic promotion is the fact that it continues to see that most repeaters end up dropping out of school.

Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam said the Ministry has observed a decrease in the amount of school drop outs since the policy was first introduced.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand believes that the automatic promotion will allow all students to be instructed in a manner that will make it more likely for them to achieve passing grades.

The Education Ministry hopes with more focus on Mathematics and English, Guyana’s pass rate at the Caribbean Council Examination would see improvements.

As the new Education Minister continues to push the policy, many parents across the country objected to the move three years ago, since they believe putting a child over to another class before understanding the work in the current class, would only mean trouble when it comes to sitting the regional examinations. The automatic promotion policy only applies to all Secondary school students.
