A Police Corporal charged in connection with the death of 15-year-old Navindra Mahes was today her granted pretrial liberty when she made her first court appearance at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

Yonelle Cumberbatch, 35, of Eastville Housing Scheme, Annandale, appeared before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs to answer to the charge of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving. The charge stems from a tragic accident that occurred on October 30, 2025, along the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

Cumberbatch was not required to plead. Bail was granted in the sum of $500,000 with strict conditions: she must lodge her passport with the court and report to the police on the first Monday of every month. The matter has been adjourned to January 6, 2026.

Mahes, a student of Annandale Secondary School, was crossing the roadway when he was struck by motor car PAB 214, driven by the accused.
