Two persons have been taken into custody following the seizure of gold, equipment and cash from a shop operating in the Mazaruni Mining District.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, officials of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) conducted an inspection at a shop at Tamakay Landing in the Mazaruni Mining District on Monday. The officials found that the shop was trading gold without the necessary approvals and licences.
During the inspection, the team seized a quantity of gold, equipment and cash. Two persons were detained by the Guyana Police Force as investigations continue.
The Ministry said the action forms part of its ongoing crackdown on illegal mining and related activities, with monitoring and enforcement operations continuing across mining districts.
The Ministry has also urged stakeholders to ensure that their operations comply with the laws and licensing requirements governing the mining sector.
