The Alliance For Change is calling for the head of the Special Organised Crime Unit, Deputy Commissioner of Police Fizal Karimbaksh, to be relieved of his duties immediately.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party also called for a full, independent and impartial investigation into allegations made against him.
According to the AFC, a female inspector of police has reportedly accused Karimbaksh of rape, assault and threatening her life. The political party said these are serious allegations of criminal behavior.
The party wants an independent team of regional and international investigators to probe the allegations. It said it has no confidence that an investigation by the police into one of its own would be impartial.
The AFC also called on the Minister of Home Affairs to publicly support an independent investigation, and urged women leaders of the People’s Progressive Party to add their voices to the call.
The party is urging independent NGOs, women’s organisations and all Guyanese to join its call for Karimbaksh to be removed from duty pending an impartial investigation.
