Three years after the October 7, 2023 attacks, Israel is marking the anniversary ahead of a closely fought national election. In the following opinion piece, first published by the Council on Foreign Relations, Elliott Abrams argues that Israel’s security position has improved even as it grows more isolated abroad. Abrams is a senior fellow for Middle Eastern Studies at the Council and a former U.S. deputy national security advisor. He also looks at a foiled attack on a FlyDubai flight, the unresolved debate over who is responsible for October 7, and why he believes Israel’s main policies are unlikely to change whoever wins.
