Police are searching for a 62-year-old man who fled the scene after a deadly altercation in Mahaica that claimed the life of 36-year-old Ray Sheoraj, also known as Redman, of Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara. The incident occurred at 23:00 hrs on Monday.
According to a statement from the Corporate Communications Unit of the Police Force, Sheoraj was at his residence in the company of several persons when an argument erupted with a male relative living in the same yard. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly inflicted an injury to Sheoraj’s left leg with a sharp object.
Sheoraj attempted to treat the wound but collapsed in the upper flat of the house. He was rushed to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police recovered a cutlass and a chopper suspected to have been used in the incident. Two men who were present at the time—a 45-year-old from Belmont, Mahaica, and a 38-year-old from Supply, Mahaica—were detained and remain in custody. Both are said to be labourers.
Additionally, a 29-year-old housewife and relative from Supply sustained minor injuries during the altercation and is currently hospitalized.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the official cause of death as investigations continue.
