Police have arrested the owner of a private security company and several of his security guards after eight firearms and ammunition were seized during an intelligence‑led operation in Sophia and Lusignan on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
The arrests came after police ranks moved in on multiple locations, including a supermarket and shopping mall in Sophia, Greater Georgetown, and a supermarket in Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
Investigators say a 31‑year‑old guard at the Sophia supermarket was found with an airsoft rifle but had no permit. At a nearby shopping mall, a 34‑year‑old guard was carrying a 12‑gauge shotgun with two live cartridges. Police noted the serial number had been filed off, and no licence or precept was produced.
At Lusignan, another guard, aged 38, was linked to an airsoft rifle discovered near a guard hut. He told police the weapon had been issued at the start of his shift.

The probe then led officers to the supervisor and owner of the security service, a 40‑year‑old man from Industry, East Coast Demerara. A search of his vehicle uncovered five more airsoft firearms—three pistols and two rifles. He too failed to produce permits or licences.
In total, eight firearms and two rounds of ammunition were recovered. All weapons have been lodged as evidence. The suspects remain in custody as the police continue their investigations.
