A Cuban national who migrated to Guyana four months ago in search of work lost his life on a construction site at Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara Monday afternoon.
The man, 28-year-old Dayrovis Martinez Mendoza, died when a poorly constructed wall collapsed on him. He and several of the colleagues were hired by a Chinese businessman, Xi Guohui Chairman of the Buxton/Foulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council, Walston
Martins said the construction was approved by the Central Housing and Planning Authority and signed off by his NDC.
Reports are that when the construction workers removed a scaffold, they noticed the wall shaking.
Labour Minister Keoma Griffith, who visited the site, described the fatal incident as unfortunate but said his ministry will continue to push for safe working environments.
The property is owned by an overseas Carlos Paul who signed a 40-year lease with Xi for the construction of a supermarket and residential quarters.
Xi, according to the police statement, told investigators that he had fifteen years’ experience in the construction industry and was overseeing the work himself. Xi could not say why the wall collapsed as he was not there but said that the fence was 15 feet high and 120 feet long.
