The US has moved to indict Guyanese Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed. The indictments are in the Southern District of the State of Florida.

The Mohameds are being accused of wire, mail fraud, money laundering and conspiracy in over 10 counts. The indictments specifically deal with gold shipped through Miami to Dubai and the purchase of a Lamborghini from California. The US seized more than 5.3 million dollars in gold last year. Since that seizure, the Mohameds were sanctioned by the US Treasury Department and have been embroiled in controversy both in Guyana and the US.

Azruddin Mohamed, however, created a political party named WIN and garnered nearly 110,000 votes in Guyana’s elections held in September 2025. Based on his party’s performance at the polls, he is the likely Opposition Leader.

The Mohamed’s businesses were subjected to scrutiny in the late 1990s when then Finance Minister Bharrat Jagdeo held that portfolio.

The Mohameds claimed they were close to the PPP administration and, over the years, provided financial and material support to the party. Nazar “Shell” Mohamed ran for office as a PPP councilor in his constituency.
