Linden politician and Alliance for Change Executive member Devin Sears was taken into custody on Sunday night in connection with the discovery of 684.99 pounds of marijuana.

According to a police statement, Sears, a former Member of Parliament was arrested at approximately 20:41 hrs near the Old Bamia Police Checkpoint in Linden. He was the driver of a minibus, bearing registration number BAJ 4486, owned by the Region 10 Tourism Committee Inc., which was stopped during a routine police stop-and-search operation.

Inside the vehicle with Sears was Albert Sandy, a 69-year-old farmer from Tacama Waterfront, Upper Berbice River. Officers reportedly observed Sears sweating profusely and questioned him about the contents of the vehicle. He allegedly responded, “I am transporting tourism plants.”

Upon conducting a search, police discovered twenty-two bulky plastic bags and four large brown canvas bags containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be marijuana. Both men were informed of the offence, arrested, and cautioned. While Sears remained silent, Sandy reportedly admitted ownership of the narcotics and claimed he had paid Sears to transport him to Parika.

The men were taken to the Mackenzie Police Station, where they remain in custody pending charges. Investigations are ongoing.
