Two men — Anil Sanchara and Vinod Gopaul — were on Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2020 murders of teenage cousins Joel and Isiah Henry, bringing a legal conclusion to a case that shocked the nation and drew widespread condemnation.
Justice Simone Morris handed down the sentence in the Berbice High Court, following the men’s conviction on June 9th by a 12-member jury.
Despite the guilty verdict and sentencing, both men continued to maintain their innocence.
Joel, 18, and his 16-year-old cousin Isiah disappeared before their mutilated bodies were found in the backlands of the West Coast Berbice community of Cotton Tree in September 2020.
The killings sparked nationwide outrage and heightened tensions across Guyana, prompting widespread calls for justice.
Investigators found the teenagers’ bodies with multiple chop wounds. Their spines had been severed, and an “X” had been carved into the forehead of one of the victims.
To date, the motive for the killings remains unknown.
