Scores of Cuban medical personnel converged at the Ministry of Health’s Brickdam Headquarters on Monday to register and obtain an Electronic Identification Card, after being accepted to work in Guyana following the termination of the bilateral medical cooperation agreement with Cuba.
Under this program, Cuban medical professionals can apply independently for work in Guyana’s healthcare system.
At the Ministry of Health, officials from the Immigration Department of the Guyana Police Force were on hand to facilitate the registration process.
Under the arrangement, those successful in securing employment are allowed to bring their families. There has been no further detail on the terms and conditions of employment. Efforts were made to contact the Health Minister at the Ministry, but it was indicated that he will engage with the media at a later date.
The long lines of foreigners piqued the curiosity of Guyanese passersby, who began inquiring about the reason for the crowd.
