A 40-year-old man of Siberia Mines, Upper Demerara River, is in police custody in connection with the discovery of 78 pounds of marijuana and more than GY$400,000 in cash.
According to a statement from the Police Force’s Corporate Communications Unit, ranks conducting an operation at Five Mile, Ituni Road, Upper Demerara River, observed two men riding separate motorcycles without registration plates.
One of the motorcyclists was seen carrying several bulky parcels strapped to the rear of his bike, prompting ranks to give chase. The rider carrying the parcels fell from his motorcycle and was apprehended, while the second rider escaped.
On examination, ranks found the parcels contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems believed to be marijuana. A further search of the suspect turned up cash amounting to GY$455,180.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the Mackenzie Police Station along with the drugs, which were lodged as evidence and carried a combined weight of 35.4 kilograms (78 pounds).
Investigations are continuing.
