A third person has been charged in the investigation into the alleged leak of surveillance footage from a shooting outside the home of Senior Superintendent Prem Narine.
He is twenty-four-year-old Police Constable Ashton Chappelle, also known as “Chappy,” of Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara.
Chappelle was charged on Monday with Obtaining and Giving Electronic Data Relating to the National Security of the State. The charge falls under the Cybercrime Act of 2018.
The Guyana Police Force says the charge stems from an alleged offence committed on Saturday, October 24th. Chappelle was arrested last Friday, October 30th.
He appeared today before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him. Bail was refused, and he was remanded to prison.
The matter was adjourned to November 24th.
The same investigation has already led to charges against Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed and Police Constable Ryan Greene.
Police say the investigation centres on the alleged unauthorised disclosure of footage connected to the shooting at Senior Superintendent Narine’s home.
Investigations are ongoing.
