A twenty-year-old babysitter has been remanded to prison, charged with taking a seven-month-old baby from Port Kaituma to the coast without the mother’s knowledge.

She is Dariana Figuera, a Venezuelan national of White Water Village in the North West District. Figuera was charged on Monday with Child Stealing, under the Criminal Law (Offences) Act.

Police say that on Wednesday, October 28th, the baby’s mother left the child in Figuera’s care while she went to work at Oronoque, Port Kaituma.

Figuera allegedly left the home with the baby and boarded a flight from Port Kaituma to Ogle International Airport. Police say she did this without the mother’s knowledge or permission.

Acting on information, police found Figuera with the infant at Hague Backdam, West Coast Demerara, at about twenty past eleven that same night. The baby was recovered safely and Figuera was arrested.

She appeared virtually before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to her. She was not required to plead.

Bail was refused, and Figuera was remanded to prison until November 11th.
