The Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) has confirmed that overseas law enforcement agencies intercepted cocaine concealed in two separate shipping containers originating from Guyana. The interceptions took place in Europe and South America earlier this month.

According to CANU, the containers were declared as carrying rice and chemicals and were inspected before leaving Guyana. No irregularities were detected at the time. Investigators now believe the consignments may have been contaminated during transhipment, a tactic commonly used by transnational drug trafficking networks to bypass port security.

However, the agency has not disclosed the names of the vessels or who owns the vessels involved, nor has it provided details about the shipping routes or the other ports where the containers may have stopped before arriving at their destinations.

CANU emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that it is working closely with international partners, as well as domestic agencies such as the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF). The drug enforcement agency reiterated its commitment to combating narcotics trafficking but declined to share further details, citing the sensitivity of the inquiry.
