A twenty-four-year-old miner is in police custody for the killing of a fellow miner. The deceased, Fitrawle McLeannon, called Cripple, 28 was stabbed to death between Saturday night and Sunday morning at Blue Mountain Backdam, in Region 7.
According to a statement by the police, the victim and suspect were among others drinking late Saturday night before returning to their camp.
Another miner related to investigators that he was awoken by a loud scream. The man said when got out of the bed he saw McLeannon lying on the ground a short distance from the kitchen area on the trail, bleeding profusely, while the suspect walked away from the scene.
Reports are that the suspect claimed that the victim slapped him thrice after which he retaliated by stabbing him three times.
The suspect, Shamer Tobin called ‘Shortman’ reportedly returned to the camp where he confessed to the incident – Tobin said after he was struck by a ‘one-hand man’ at Junior’s camp, he stabbed the man and left him on the ground.
During an examination of McLeannon’s body, ranks observed stab wounds to the centre of his abdomen; left hip and centre of the back, near the spinal area.
A small, pink-handled pair of scissors was found in the centre of the trail next to McLeannon’s body.
Tobin, according to the statement, was picked up by officers during search efforts in the Marawah Backdam, Cuyuni River. The police said Tobin during an interview allegedly voluntarily gave his version in a video recording.
“Me and the man was drinking, and I was high, and the man box me, and I bore him about three times. Afterward, I went back to camp and put on my long boots, and I roll out.”
