Businessman Ghalee Khan was today remanded to prison on a charge of murder in connection to the killing of his girlfriend Marisa Beete which occurred last week at her West Bank Demerara Home.
Khan, the owner of Integrated Security Service appeared before Magistrate Rondel Weever in the Wales Magistrate Court.
Several relatives of Beete were at court to see the man responsible for the young woman’s death. As he was being escorted from the Police lockup to the Court, relatives hurled insults at him as police officers moved quickly to silence them.
It was tense in the courtroom. With his hands still shackled and attired in a long white sleeve shirt, blue jeans, and brown shoes, Khan looking blank or sometimes puzzled stared at Beete’s relatives much to their annoyance, which saw the police officer telling them twice to keep their voices down.
Khan is being represented by a battery of lawyers led by Eusi Anderson. Anderson, who seems to be putting forward an insanity defence, told the court that Khan attempted to take his life on multiple occasions. One of the most recent attempts was days before the killing of Beete.
Anderson also told the court that because of Khan’s mental capacity, he could not give instructions to his legal team, but his mother stepped in and assisted.
Among the orders handed down by Magistrate Weaver was that Khan undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Anderson told the court that he would be moving to also have an independent psychiatric evaluation done of Khan. However, the magistrate said that could be done once the psychiatrist identified by the Georgetown Public Hospital submits the report on the 27th.
Khan will return to court on May 27 when the matter has been set for report. Beete’s aunt Juliet during an interview with reporters outside of the court they just want justice.
