A 20-year-old is dead following an altercation with a 41-year-old man at La Parafaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.

Police in Regional Division #3 say the alleged murder occurred between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at a shop in the community. The dead man has been identified as Roberto Grant, called “Kayan,” an unemployed resident of La Parafaite Harmonie.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the 41-year-old suspect, a construction worker from Grove, East Bank Essequibo, was at the location when an altercation reportedly broke out between him and Grant. During the confrontation, both men allegedly armed themselves with objects and inflicted injuries on each other.

The suspect later went to the La Parafaite Harmonie Police Station and made a report. Police ranks responded to the scene and subsequently escorted the injured men to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where Grant was admitted. He later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.

Investigators recovered a broken piece of a glass bottle from the scene, which has since been lodged. CCTV cameras in the area were observed and are expected to be reviewed as part of the investigation.

The suspect was treated for his injuries and remains in police custody as investigations continue. A post mortem examination is to be carried out on Grant’s remains to determine his cause of death.
