Police in Regional Division Ten are investigating the discovery of 72.1 pounds of cocaine during an operation along the Five Miles–Ituni Trail, Upper Demerara River.
According to a statement released by the Corporate Communications Unit of the Guyana Police Force, officers on an operation observed a motor pickup travelling out of the trail. Upon seeing the police, the driver stopped the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes, leaving the pickup behind.
During a search of the vehicle, ranks found a large garbage bag on the floor behind the driver’s seat containing thirty (30) rectangular parcels. An examination of the parcels found them to contain a whitish, rock-like substance suspected to be cocaine.
The drugs were escorted to the Mackenzie Police Station, where they were weighed and amounted to 72.1 pounds (32.7 kg), before being lodged along with the vehicle as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
