A 46-year-old security guard is in police custody in connection with the killing of 39-year-old Kevon Benjamin on Saturday, at a supermarket in the East Coast Demerara community of Beterverwagting, Railway Embankment.

In a statement, the Corporate Communications Unit of the Guyana Police Force said Benjamin, of La Bonne Intention (LBI), also on the East Coast of Demerara, was involved in an altercation during which a firearm was allegedly discharged, resulting in Benjamin sustaining a gunshot injury to his abdomen.

The man was rushed to the Enmore Regional Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

The 46-year-old security guard was arrested and taken into custody. A 9mm Beretta firearm, along with a magazine containing sixteen matching rounds of ammunition, was recovered and lodged at the station as the investigation continues.

A post-mortem examination is to be conducted on Benjamin’s remains to determine his cause of death.
