If the United States funding for HIV/AIDS is not restored after April, then the possibility exists that new HIV infections and AIDS related deaths could increase significantly.
Executive Director of the UNAIDS Winnie Byanyima at a press conference this morning said the evidence received indicates that the impact of the cut in funding is devastating.
According to Ms Byanyima, because of the cuts in US funding, some twenty-seven countries in Africa and Asia are dealing with staff shortages, disruptions of diagnostics and the collapsing of treatment and surveillance systems.
The UN Executive Director said while their projections are for four years in the long term, they see the AIDS pandemic resurging globally.
