According to a United States Embassy spokesperson in Guyana, “Guyana’s Attorney General handled the selection of the attorneys litigating the extradition request without input from the U.S. prosecution team (or from the Embassy for that matter).”
The Embassy’s note appears clear up the issue given recent statements implying the U.S. either selected or approved the attorneys.
The issue arose after it was revealed that Guyana recruited Jamaican attorneys who are paid over $62, USD per month to pursue an extradition request by the US for Nazar and Azruddin Mohamed pursuant to an extant case in the southern district of Florida.
Guyana’s Attorney General Senior Counsel Anil Nandlall has made several media appearances over the past few days indicating that the US government was involved in the selection or approval of the attorneys included a Guyanese attorney Glenn Hanoman. At least one other government minister, other officials and government aligned social and legacy media operatives have repeatedly made these claims.
