A fifteen-year-old East Ruimveldt boy was one of two persons killed during a failed robbery of a Chinese-owned supermarket in Hadfield Street on Tuesday evening. 

The child Tyrese Adams and Orwin Garraway -22 also of the East Ruimveldt community were shot and killed by the security guard on duty at the supermarket.

According to a statement issued by the Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) of the Police Force, four identifiable males armed with handguns attempted to rob the Jai Jai Supermarket managed by 31-year-old Gan Zhang at approximately 19:30hrs. 

The supermarket which has two cashier booths is manned by a security guard on a 12-hour shift and at the time of the robbery attempt a 35-year-old security guard who was armed with a 9MM pistol and 15 rounds of ammunition was on duty. 

Two of the four suspects entered the supermarket dressed in dark clothing and black ski masks covering their faces armed with handguns.

The suspects each took a cashier booth – one pointing the gun to the cashier demanding cash while the other ransacked the second booth.

The entire ordeal, which was captured on closed-circuit TV in the supermarket, showed the security guard emerging from the back and confronting the men. One of the suspects fell on the floor inside the supermarket while the second suspect collapsed on the road 15 feet west of the supermarket.  

The security guard told investigators when he exited the supermarket, he observed two other suspects who were standing outside running west on Hadfield Street and made good their escape. 

Two black Haojue motorcycles, one without a number plate and the other bearing registration number CP 623 parked outside the supermarket with keys in the ignition. 

At the scene ranks recovered a Glock 17 pistol with eight matching rounds of ammunition next to the remains of one of the suspects; one live 9MM round of ammunition; thirteen 9MM spent shells and three fragments were found inside the supermarket while a 9MM spent shell and three fragments were found on the road in front of the supermarket. 

Additionally, the bodies of the suspects were examined, and 22-year-old Garraway gunshot wounds to his right and left side ribs, hands, nose, and right shoulder while Adams’ body bore gunshot wounds to his right upper shoulder, stomach, one to his lower back and left hip. 

The firearm and spent shells were collected from the scene to be processed.
