More than $571 million worth of marijuana was destroyed by the Narcotics Branch of the Guyana Police Force on Tuesday.

The Corporate Communications Unit of the Police Force said the eradication exercise occurred in the Wiruni Savannahs, Upper Berbice River.

During the operation, eight plots of land were being prepared for cultivation. Further, a makeshift camp was discovered a short distance away from the fields along with a drying area.

The camp measured 30×20 feet and consisted of a living and kitchen area. The camp also contained 1,400 pounds of dried cannabis.

After a further search of the camp, officers unearthed a 12 Gauge shotgun without a serial number along with 9 matching cartages.

The firearm has been submitted for ballistics while the narcotics were destroyed by fire.

Meanwhile, in the Wiruni Creek in the Upper Berbice River, ranks attached to the narcotics branch, destroyed $274 million worth of marijuana.

The plot of land contained 2,000 marijuana plants ranging from two to five feet in height. A makeshift camp was also discovered with a drying area. 580 pounds of dried cannabis were found.
