The High Court has ruled that Dr. Leslie Ramsammy defamed journalist Enrico Woolford, awarding Woolford five million dollars in damages.
Justice Peter Hugh, in a ruling handed down on Thursday, found that Dr. Ramsammy defamed Woolford in the column “Ramsammy Ruminations,” published in the Guyana Times six years ago.
The judge found that Ramsammy wrongfully alleged Woolford, the Editor-in-Chief of Capitol News was part of a plot to rig the 2020 Guyana elections.
Ramsammy was ordered to pay Woolford five million dollars in damages, plus two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in costs.
The judge dismissed the claim against the Guyana Times itself, awarding the newspaper two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in costs.
Justice Hugh also ordered Ramsammy to publish a public apology and retraction to Woolford within 21 days and imposed a permanent ban on Ramsammy and the Guyana Times from publishing any further defamatory words about Woolford by Ramsammy.
Woolford was represented by Attorney Eusi Anderson.
